That Was Then, This Is Now: 90 Years of WeHaKee! Camp Cookout

Oh, the food at WeHaKee!   The food at WeHaKee Camp for Girls has always been considered some of the best around, but it's the weekly all-camp cookouts that have been and continue to be camper favorites!   There is just something special about coming together for a meal outside, with the sun shining through the canopy of the great white pines and the breeze keeping the air cool and comfortable.   As it was back then, there is no need for ipods, cell phones, lap tops or any other electronic distractions... just fun, friends and food!

In our first photo, the 'Then' shot, we see a cookout from 76 summers ago in 1936 at WeHaKee when it was located in Marinette, Wisconsin.

In our 'Now' photo, we see some of our happy campers just last Saturday, enjoying the cookout in the Valley on a beautiful July evening at WeHaKee!

Sunday Snippet: Creating the Culture of Relationship

You will find our tagline, At the Heart of WeHaKee is Relationship throughout our materials and communications.   What does that really mean anyway?   Read on and find out!

Sunday Snippet: What a Great Place to Fail!

Yes, yes, we're a day late, but we were out enjoying our last weekend of the summer and didn't want to spend it in front of the computer!   So, we  hope you will please forgive us.   Here are our thoughts for this week:

FAILURE.   It is not a word many of us like to hear when describing our performance or that of our children.   Failure is often equated with being a loser or with someone who has nothing to offer.   The thought of failing will often conjure up enormous dread, sometimes to the point of making us physically sick.   It is such a grossly misunderstood term and that is such a shame, because without experiencing failure few experience success!

Pack Camp in Your School Backpack!

We're back after taking a couple of weeks to relax and relocate back to our administrative offices.   We're settled in now and ready to continue preparations for Summer 2012 ~ only 287 days to go!!

Sunday Snippet: Another WeHaKee Summer into The Mist!

This morning we said our good-byes to our Mother/Daughter/Auntie campers as well as, with great sadness, to the remarkable WeHaKee staff of 2011.   It was bittersweet as we revealed in the wonderful community we had created, yet wallowed in it's heartbreaking and inevitable conclusion.   Although the summer camp season may now be behind us for 2011, we plan to continue our Sunday conversations about camp life and the community that is WeHaKee!

Sunday Snippet: Good Bye Girls, Hello Families!

While our weeks of girls camp have come to an end, the Sunday Snippet continues as does camp with an eventful week ahead. Below, the directors discuss the excitement of the week (and rest of the year) to come!

It was a bitter sweet day last Friday as we said good-bye to our last group of wonderful girls and young women and wrapped up girls camp at WeHaKee for 2011. The fun, the excitement, the welcoming nature and the pure joy these campers shared was remarkable, so it was sad to see them depart. No doubt the bungee cords have begun to tug away at their hearts, reminding  them of their wonderful experiences! We also said good-bye to a number of our staff who are making their way home to attend school or return to their home countries.

WeHaKee in the Words of a Camper: Change & Growth

WeHaKee campers are safe and sound after a powerful storm rolled through the area Tuesday. This morning, sunshine welcomed campers as they set out to participate in their last day of activities. Just as girls experienced this change in weather, they too experience change within. Below, a CIT reflects on the changes she has experienced throughout her camp years.
