FRIDAYS WITH FRANKY! Meet Our 2013 Summer Staff ~ Round 1!
Hi Everyone, its me Franky with our first round of 2013 WeHaKee Staff introductions. You already met our Directors and Assistant Director, so today I want to introduce you to several members of our staff team. So let’s begin, shall we!!
A veteran WeHaKee staff member, April joins us for her third year this summer. April comes to us all the way from Karana Downs, Australia.
“I have backpacked around europe for over 3 months, I have a slight addiction to youtube, and my laugh is pretty distinct & can be heard a mile away!”
With her wild creativity and her fun-loving enthusiasm, April is stepping up to be our Program Coordinator this summer. We are thrilled that April is returning and can’t wait to see what amazing & unique ideas she has for us to make WeHaKee even more fun and crazy! Make sure you ask her about her unique collection of jumpers!
Erin is joining us for her first year at WeHaKee, but her third year as a counselor. She has spent the past two summers on staff at a 4-H Camp. She originates from Ridgeway, a town of 600 in southwestern Wisconsin. As a devoted Wisconsin resident she loves the Wisconsin Badgers, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Cheese!
“I have traveled to England and Spain, as well as twice to France. I was fortunate enough to get to travel to World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain two summers ago and take part in mass with Pope Benedict and 2.5 million other Catholics.”
Erin currently attends Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin where she is studying to become a high school general science and chemistry teacher. We can’t wait to see you at WeHaKee this summer!
A resident of East Amherst, New York and currently studying at the University of Dallas (that would be in Texas, y’all!), Melissa is also joining us for the first time at WeHaKee this summer. This will be her first opportunity to be a camp counselor, but she comes with tons of experience in drama and theatre arts.
“If I could be barefoot all the time I definitely would. I just love being happy!!!”
Based on her photo, We think we know who should be the first to lead the ‘Penguin Song’ – Penguins Unite!! Pretty sure Melissa is going to fit in just fine!
Although new to our WeHaKee staff, Katie is quite familiar with the surroundings of Camp WeHaKee, as her family has a cabin on our very own Hunter Lake, just across from camp. Katie calls Schererville, Indiana home and she attends the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida where she studies marine biology, conservation ecology and biology.
“I collect skeleton keys, I recently started to teach myself/play ukulele, I’ve been to the Galapagos Islands on a field biology research trip.”
Katie will step into the role of business manager at WeHaKee Camp for Girls, doing a myriad of important things to make sure all keeps running smoothly throughout the summer. Perhaps she’llhava a chance to fish the waters of Hunter Lake with our great campers, too!
Travelling all the way from Maurewa, New Zealand, Alyssa Jones joins us at WeHaKee Camp for Girls for the first time. It is not her first time spending time in America, but she is hoping there is much more to see than Los Angeles! I can’t wait for her to see the Big Fish in Hayward!
“I love dressing up, playing fun games and taking on crazy challenges that push me outside my comfort zone. I recently completed the Oxfam Trailwalker which entailed walking 100km non-stop and through the night. A massive challenge which I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in despite being awake for 30hrs!!.
Most of all I am looking forward to working with the children and helping them grow into happy, considerate, and confident young people.”
We look forward to the energy and excitement that Alyssa brings to WeHaKee!
Graduating from Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin with a degree in sport management right before arriving at WeHaKee, Kassie is very excited to join us this summer. She is a life-long resident of La Crosse which goes a long way in explaining her love of travel. Kassie is also quite familiar with the area around WeHaKee as her family has a cabin just a few miles away on Perch Lake.
“I am a gym rat and a I love to learn new sports. I am obsessed with Nicholas Sparks – I own almost all of his books and movies. I love animals, especially my golden retriever, Sierra, who now only has one eye. And my favorite food is cheeseburgers!”
Kassie’s positive energy, athleticism and great attitude is a successful mix that will serve the WeHaKee community well!
Although she is a first time staff member, Anne is no stranger to WeHaKee having attended as a camper for many years! Anne admits having a long love affair with WeHaKee Camp for Girls and many of her family have also attended including her sister, mother and several aunts. Home for Anne is Western Springs, Illinois and she currently attends Loyola University in Chicago where she is studying elementary education.
“The summer before my junior year of high school i had the adventure of a lifetime and went on a teen travel service trip to Australia! I fell in love with the people and the land, and especially kangaroos which quickly became my new favorite animal. I also went skydiving while I was there! Greatest thrill! I am the second oldest in a family of four and love my role as the eldest girl! My favorite activities include canoeing and water skiing- everything on the water is my favorite! I look forward to a summer filled with lots of laughs.”
We are thrilled to have Anne back on camp and can’t wait to see the positive impact of her infectious enthusiasm and genuine love of WeHaKee!
Originally from Northfield, Minnesota, Lauren is currently studying animal sciences at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. She hopes to continue on through graduate studies to either acquire a PhD in equine nutrition or becoming a veterinarian. She brings her experiences in several camp programs to WeHaKee this summer.
“I am member of NDSU’s Intercollegiate Hunt Seat Team. I have been riding for 13 years, and compete in Hunter/Jumper and Eventing. I have traveled to over 30 states on family road trips. I love spending time with my family and 14 hours in car is a sure fire way to do it!
I love adventure and being outdoors, some of my favorite summer memories are summer nights dancing in a good rain storm. I have a secret love of all things Alpacas and hope to own some of the little fluff balls one day!”
Lauren can’t wait to get to know the campers at WeHaKee this summer and we can’t wait for them to meet her!
Christina attends the University of Minnesota-Morris where she studies economics, business management and studio art while participating in intercollegiate soccer and tennis. She originally hales from Menomonie, Wisconsin – also the home to former longtime WeHaKee director, Marie Karen Hawkinson!
“My two brothers and sister are 3 of the coolest people ever. I like to think that I am an organized person, but in reality most of the time I am not. My favorite hobby is baking…I especially like to make and decorate cakes. My favorite veggies are sweet corn and cucumbers.”
In addition to being a great role model for our campers, we are secretly hoping to check out Christina’s cake making talents at some point this summer!
Hope you have enjoyed meeting our first group of WeHaKee Staff Team members. Check back next week to meet even more! We’re Mighty Glad They’re Here!
