Sunday Snippet: Girl Power!
WeHaKee Camp for Girls has always been a place that values girls and young women deeper and far beyond outward appearances, but we know that cultural pressures in the greater world seldom embrace what girls can do over how they visually appear. Although we aren’t providing an endorsement for any product, we absolutely love a commercial that has made the rounds recently on social media emphasizing the multi dimensionality of girls and young women. No need for princesses here!
The princess culture has deep roots in American popular culture often emphasizing the need for ‘her’ to find a prince to become complete and live happily ever after. Recently however, there has been a popularized pushback where more independent princesses have little need for Prince Charming, only letting him in the story line on her terms. A positive development yes, but still in need of real forward movement.
Recently, GoldieBlox released an empowering video brushing the pink princess culture aside and embracing a multi-dimensional girl wanting to make a greater positive impact on her world.

With that said, a few years back one of our older campers who had attend WeHaKee for 5 years, shared an original poem to express her thoughts about her WeHaKee experiences. We think it says it all!
This is Why
Because not every girl loves pink.
Because not every girl’s favorite hobby is shopping.
Because every girl isn’t the same.
This is a place where there are no cookie-cutter girls.
Because this is a place where girls with all different kinds of personalities
and ambitions come together as one community, one family.
This is a place where everyone cares.
This is a place where you can gain more courage
than you ever thought possible.
This is a place to try new things.
This is a place to touch the stars.
This is a place where you don’t have to be afraid.
This is a place, a community, a family,
where you can make the best friends,
who teach you the most in the shortest amount of time.
This is to the girls who made my summer.
This is to the place that changed my life.
This is to the place I never want to leave.
This is camp WeHaKee!
Have a great week everyone!
