Thank You Minnetonka!
We spoke with many great parents at the Minnetonka Community Parent Fair at Minnetonka (MN) High School yesterday! For those who stopped by, thanks so much for taking the time to talk with me! I was reminded of how many ways WeHaKee embraces acceptance and inclusivity as I had several wonderful conversations with parents inquiring if WeHaKee might be welcoming to their daughters with special needs. It was so easy to simply say ‘Yes’ and not just because we as directors feel their child will thrive at WeHaKee, but knowing how our community of girls and young women actively embrace a sense of welcoming when they are at our camp.
Certainly we (as an organization) are prepared to address and adapt to special needs that may be intellectual, emotional, social, medical or physical, but more importantly, the campers and staff over the years have created a culture at WeHaKee that accepts and welcomes each girl for who they are. And they do this in a manner that celebrates each girl’s uniqueness and individuality without stamping a ‘special needs’ label across her identity. Girls with special needs fit in very well at WeHaKee and frankly, once they arrive at camp their ‘special needs’ label seems to rapidly fade as they become another accepting and contributing member of the WeHaKee community.
Thank you again for allowing us to visit with all of you in Minnetonka. It was a great pleasure and we look forward to seeing you this summer! Oh, I almost failed to mention ~ Nurse Susan, who lives nearby took the time to stop in to say ‘Hi’. Thanks so much for doing so – it was great to see you again!
